How to check a roofer before you sign

  1. Look up the license. Search the name or license number on the Florida DBPR license search or with our roofer license check. The license should be active and in the name on your contract.
  2. Know the license type. A certified roofing contractor (license starting CCC) may work anywhere in Florida. A registered roofing contractor (starting RC) may work only in the local jurisdictions where they are registered.
  3. Ask for proof of insurance. General liability and workers' compensation (or a valid exemption), with you able to confirm it with the insurer.
  4. Make sure the permit is pulled under their license. Ask who pulls it and confirm it with the building department before work starts.
  5. Read the contract for the required notice. Florida requires roof contracts to include a notice about prohibited insurance practices. If it is missing you can void the contract within 10 days (Florida Statutes 489.147).

A license is a minimum, not a recommendation. It does not tell you about workmanship, price or reviews.
